Whalers win big in their season opener, Orioles take 3 of 4 from the Yankees to lower their magic number to 3, Navy wins and the Coast Guard Academy brings the Secretaries Cup back to New London, where it belongs, by topping the Merchant Marine Academy. USS Akron (ZRS-4), a helium-filled rigid airship of the Navy, “showed the flag” in flights over Puget Sound Navy Yard on May 24, 1932. Akron also served as a flying aircraft carrier for launching and recovering F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes. It was destroyed in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey in April 1933, killing 73 of the 76 crew members and passengers aboard. Akron’s loss spelled the beginning of the end for the rigid airship in the Navy.
